I am generally not involved in hardware design issues but i like when people spend their spare time to do good for the public by researching things. I came to your site because i wanted to do some reading before buying the Galaxy S. Of course i am not the average mobile phone user. In the real world i am developing enterprise java apps but started developing a small android app recently... Again, thanks for your efforts. Since there is very little documentation to describe any differences between the OMAP 4440 and the Tegra 250 (for example) I did not cover the topic.

However, as more information on the specific manufacturer's implementations of Cortex-A9 come through, I look forward to writing about them. I wish I had the time to expand upon it now that much more information is flooding in now that people have had the chance to benchmark both phones. The Galaxy S definitely outperforms the EVO 4G, however there have been some surprising results in performance from TI's own 45 nm OMAP processors. Take a look at this post if you haven't already:
http://sean-the-electrofreak.blogspot.com/2010/06/ruminations-on-various-benchmarks-for.htmlElectrofreakhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00831677178752927710noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6569735948568642990.post-28261134937630366012010-07-09T20:45:43.044-04:002010-07-09T20:45:43.044-04:00Swehes:

Proper use of the word effected would be in a sentence such as "The modifications Samsung effected are estimated to impact 20% of the Hummingbird's functions, and of those, on average 25-50% less instructions are needed to complete each task."

To further explain the difference, read Dictionary.com's usage note for affect:
Usage Note : Affect and effect have no senses in common. As a verb affect is most commonly used in the sense of "to influence" ( how smoking affects health ). Effect means "to bring about or execute": layoffs designed to effect savings. Thus the sentence These measures may affect savings could imply that the measures may reduce savings that have already been realized, whereas These measures may effect savings implies that the measures will cause new savings to come about.

Grammar is a pet peeve of mine too ;)Electrofreakhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00831677178752927710noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6569735948568642990.post-42063921740759286342010-07-09T13:23:35.934-04:002010-07-09T13:23:35.934-04:00I like this article. I could delete the previous post, but I'm in the mood to put some smackdown on this moron.

Your comment is pretty amusing, my idiotic little friend, because this article was written around 3 months ago. This was shortly after CTIA 2010, where the Samsung Galaxy S was announced alongside only a handful of specs.

The phone was demoed briefly at a show where reviewers were allowed to touch it for a couple minutes at a time only with pre-loaded (and no benchmark) software installed.

So this article was written based upon virtually no available information, and absolutely zero opportunity to test the device alongside the EVO 4G, which also had just been announced and also was unavailable for testing.

I hear the Windows 7 phones are coming out in a few months. Why don't you "do a little research" and write an article on a few Windows 7 phones? What's that? There isn't any information on them aside from some rumored stats, a corporate press statement, and some shaky camera shots?

Welcome to my world :)

PS - Next time you feel the need to open your mouth and make yourself sound like a fool, check the date on the article first. ;)Electrofreakhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00831677178752927710noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6569735948568642990.post-49031547022400648242010-06-28T15:52:34.676-04:002010-06-28T15:52:34.676-04:00"Samsung may be citing purely theoretical num..."Samsung may be citing purely theoretical numbers ..."

Ok so did you hold both phones side-by-side and test them to actually verify this long piece of crap? Looks like I need to find where that was stated and double-check it.

Cortex-A9 improvements: Yeah, A9 brings a lot of new things to the table like out-of-order instruction handling etc, but I wasn't sure I wanted to wade too deep into the details. If I can provide my user with a simple explanation of A9's merits, I may expand upon it further.

Qualcomm and Samsung working on Cortex A9: I already removed that reference entirely. It was a rumor that I couldn't corroborate, and you're right, Qualcomm has invested too much into Snapdragon to let it go so soon.

Next-gen Snapdragons: Well, I've seen some pretty good rumors stating that a Windows Mobile 7 Series phone will hit the market in Fall sporting a dual-core Snapdragon (call it a flagship device if you will). We'll see if that actually pans out. But I haven't heard a whole lot about the single-core 45 nm "A" varients, have you heard anything interesting?

The article has been republished with the changes I made last night, but tonight when I put the final touches on it, I'll be taking a look at some of the points you made above. As usual, thank you for your feedback Hugo, it's much appreciated.Electrofreakhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00831677178752927710noreply@blogger.com
